Rivers State set for 50th anniversary celebration (Read full details)

The Rivers government has commenced in earnest preparations for the state’s 50th anniversary. To this end, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike had raised a committee headed by Ferdinand Alabraba to plan, coordinate and execute the event.

Created on May 27, 1967 by the General Yakubu Gowon military administration, Rivers has been acclaimed as excelling in different spheres of the economy under the Wike government and the success story is to be relived at the event, running from May 7 to 31.

According to a statement by the organisers, programmes had been put in place to highlight the rapid growth under the current administration as well as the key projects that are advancing the state’s infrastructure, tourism and general economy.

The statement read: “Under the Wike administration, the state has experienced an exhilarating economic growth with a much desired focus on tourism and development of new amusement parks with cosmopolitan outlook and resilient spirit.”

It noted that the state boasts of natural resources, including crude oil, and remains one of the best investment destinations in Nigeria.

The statement added: “River State has a proud and illustrious history. The indigenous people are famed for their industry. The rich cultural tapestry of the state will be on display. The colourful canoe regatta, beauty pageants and many other cultural activities during the celebration will serve as an attractive invitation to investors to come and explore the potentials for growth in the state’s tourism and hospitality sector.

“To further demonstrate commitment to service, the government, will during the celebration, lay the foundation stone for key developmental projects in many parts of the state. This is consistent with the vision of the Wike administration.”
